The light shines on North Conway Water Precinct green energy projects
CONWAY — Peering at the electrical monitor, her right hand shading the digital readout from the bright sunlight, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) watched as the numbers clicked up at the North Conway Water Precinct’s wastewater treatment plant at Sawmill Lane on Aug. 12.
Barely a year after precinct residents voted again to raise nearly $6 million on system improvements and alternative energy installations, the sun was beaming photons of light onto the 744 solar panels, freeing electrons whose fate is to be captured and used for the resulting electrical current.

Catching Some Rays - Green-energy project at North Conway Water Precinct will generate electricity and interest
CONWAY — North Conway may be known for its quaint village, scenic vistas and abundant outlet shopping, but a green-energy project under way at the town’s wastewater plant is creating plenty of buzz across the region.

The North Conway wastewater facility is a 'State of the Art' 1.5 Million Gallon per Day (MGD) advanced wastewater treatment plant incorporating the latest wastewater treatment technologies available. These advanced technologies are vital to the preservation of the pristine quality of the surrounding Mount Washington Valley and Saco River.
|
In addition to wastewater treatment, the plant also receives and treats septage from septic systems and leachate from local landfills. This reduces the environmental impacts that result from overburdened septic systems and long trucking distances to remote disposal sites.
|
Flowing through New Hampshire and Maine, the Saco River is a major tourist attraction in this lovely valley setting. The facility incorporates aesthetically appealing architectural and engineering features to complement the natural beauty of its New Hampshire setting. Situated between the Saco River and the Conway Scenic Railroad, the facility has been designed to resemble a railroad station with outbuildings. The outbuildings have been designed to blend with the surrounding farms. The clarifiers and sludge holding tanks have been covered to provide odor control and a low profile, thus reducing impact to the river boundary.
